The 1st A.G.M was held on 09/12/1971. The Club had in its rolls 3 Patrons, 23 Life members, 75 Ordinary members, 5 Associate members and 6 Student members.
The Club held regular shooting meets on Sundays for its members at the 25 meter Range at the West Hill Barracks from 27/09/1970.
Sri.M.Joseph IAS, District Collector was the first President, Prof. M.P.Sreedharan, was the 1st Honorary Secretary and Dr.A.G.Nair – the first Hony. Treasurer.
The first District Competitions were held on 05/12/1971.
Our Club hosted the 13th Kerala State Shooting Championship for the first time in March 1972. The competitions were held at the 50meter range at the Guruvayoorappan College, Calicut.
The Club moved to the present range at Thondayad in 1972, with a temporary 25 Mtr range. This was made possible by the sustained support of the then District Collector Sri.M.G.K Murthy IAS and Sri.I.Thangaraj IPS, District Supdt. of Police.
The 2nd AGM was on 04/12/1972, 3rd AGM on 30/12/1973.
A temporary 50 mtr new range was inaugurated in March 1974 along with the 14th Kerala State Shooting Championship which was hosted by us. The State Meet was held from 22nd to 24th March 1974. The Championship saw the emergence of a new State Champion in Sri.Sunny Thomas, who went on to become the Chief shooting coach of India and conferred the highest honour for Coaches ‘Dronacharya’. The State Junior Championship was won by our own student member Sri. Renji Sebastian.
In 1975, the Club purchased 10 Nos .22 Bruno Rifle from the National Rifle Association of India at price of Rs.752/- each.
The 15th Kerala State Shooting Championship was also organized by our
Club
In March 1975. The Championships were held on 28th, 29th & 30th March
1975 and Sri. Sunny Thomas was again the State Champion.
The fifth AGM was on 15/03/1976, Prof.M.P.Sreedhran, who was the founder Hony. Secretary stepped down along with Sri.K.E.Ramachandran who was the Hony. Treasurer from 1971 and also the live wire of the Club. Sri.Darius Marshall took over as the Hony. Secretary and Sri.K.P Narendran as the Hony. Treasurer,.
A fund raising programme was organized and an amount of about Rs.25000/- was collected towards the construction of the new 50 meter range with a permanent butt and covered firing point.
The new 50 meter range and covered firing point was completed in line for the 19th Kerala State Meet which we hosted from 22nd to 24th December 1978.
Sri.P.T. Sreedevanunni took over as the Secretary in 1979. 1979 to 1981,
the ever active and vibrant- Sri.P.Sahadevan was the Treasurer. 1981 – 84,
Sri. P.Sukumaran was the Treasurer and 1984 – 85 ,P.T.Sreevalsan Unni was
the Treasurer.
The construction of the Club House started during this period. Miss. Beena
Ramachandran was the State Womens Champion during this time and represented
the State at the Nationals and won many medals including Gold.
From 1985 to 1987, Sri. P.V.John was the Secretary and Sri.P.K.Ahammed ,
the Treasurer.
A fund raising programme was organized to raise funds to complete the Club
house. The film ‘Chemmeen’ was shown at Blue diamond Theatre, and raised
an amount of Rs.15,764/-.
The Club house building was completed and was inaugurated on 2nd March 1986
by our then President Sri.N.K.Narayana Murthy IAS – district Collector.
From 1987 to 1991, Sri.P.K.Ahammed was the Hony. Secretary and Sri.Jose
Joseph , Hony. Treasurer . Sri.Noor Mohammed did an excellent job as the
Quarter Master.
We hosted the 27th Kerala State Shooting Championship from 8th to 12th November 1989. This was the 6th State Meet at Calicut and was one of the best organized State Meet ever, with record participation. Our shooters excelled with 13 medals, with Sri. Darius Marshall and Mrs. Beena Ramachandran Winning Gold in the STD Rifle 3P and STD Rifle Prone Womens respectively. Darius Marshall continued to win Gold in the Veterans event at the National level.
Amendments to the Bye Laws of the Club we made during this period and passed in the General Body on 29th June 1991. One major amendment was the inclusion of Additional District Magistrate as the IInd Vice President and a senior active member as the IIIrd Vice President. Sri. Darius Marshall, the Veteran Shooter and Senior Member was elected as the first IIIrd Vice President
Sri. D.V.Narayanan took over as the Hony. Secretary in 1991. Sri.P.Sukumaran was the Treasurer during 1991-92 and Sri.Shyam Shivadas, the Quarter Master.
1992-95, Sri.V.R.Gopinath, was the Treasurer and Sri. Noor Mohammed, the Quarter Master. Club functioning started going a little of the track during this period. The State Association was also not functioning during this period and hence no State Meets were conducted. But our Club at that time being directly affiliated to NRAI, we could participate in the National Meets. Even during this time , our members, Darius Marshall and Sri. Ajay James kept the Club flag flying high, by winning medals at the National level.
Darius Marshall won Gold in the Veterans event in the 1994 & 1995 National Meets. He won Silver in the 1993Nationals at Madras. Ajay James won Gold in 1993 G.V.Mavlankar in the .22 Rifle Open Sight Junior event. He also won Bronze at the 1993 Madras Nationals. They also won Gold at the 1994 Karnataka State Meet held at Bangalore.
Club General body was convened after a gap of 4 years in 1996 and Sri.D.V.Narayanan continued as the Secretary and Sri. Bhuvandas K, become the Treasurer. Sri. Noor Mohammed continued as Quarter Master. The name of the Club was changed to ‘Kozhikode District Rifle Association’ during this period.
The activities of the Association slowed down during this period with weekly practice meets becoming irregular and attendance dropping . Annual District Meets and AGMs were also not be conducted regularly. But, even during these difficult times, we could organize two State Championships – one from 1st – 3rd November 1998 and 2nd from 12th to 13th May 2001 due to the efforts taken by the then State Rifle Association Vice President and our member Sri.Jose Joseph..
Club General Body Meeting was finally convened after a gap of 8 years on
6th October 2004. A new set of office bearers took over the reins of the
Association with Sri.Jose Joseph as Hony. Secretary , Sri.M.K.Harindranath
as Treasurer and Sri.Jacob George Kynadi as Quarter Master. Sri. Darius
Marshall continued to be the IIIrd Vice President. The activities of the
Association became vibrant with the inclusion of large number of student
members. Weekly practice meets became more regular and attendance and involvement
of members also improved considerably.
Due to the active involvement of Executive Committee member Sr.V.B.Karunakaran
and Smt.Alphonsa Mathew, an NCC officer, who joined in 2006, a large number
of youngsters joined the Association as Student Members. Annual District
Meets became regular and active. Summer Coaching camp for students became
a regular feature due to interest shown by the then District Collector & our
President Sri. Jayathilak IAS, who was also a keen shooter.
Darius Marshall continued to bring honours to the Association, by winning medals at the State & National levels.
26.61 cents of road facing land was taken back by the Government from us during this time for the construction of the Vigilance and Anticorruption office building . The lease of our range land had expired in 2003 and we had difficulty in getting it renewed. But, due to the bold stand taken by our President Sri. Jayathilak IAS, we were able to pay the lease rent on an yearly basis.
At the General Body Meeting on 3rd March 2008, Bye laws of the Association
were amended to be in par with the directions of the State Sports Council
and terms of office of elected office bearers were made 4 years, Two new
category of members, namely Donors and Hony. Members were added. Entry fees
of all categories of membership were also enhanced. Sri.Jose Joseph & Sri.M.K.Harindranath
were
again elected as Hony. Secretary & Hony. Treasurer for four years as
per the amended Bye laws. Sri. V.B.Karunakaran was elected as Quarter
Master. Sri.P.K.Sajeevan, former International shooter and long time coach
of the Indian Navy team was enrolled as a Hony. Member. The regular presence
of Sri.V.B.Karunakaran and Sri.P.K.Sajeevan at the range enthused the young
shooters and their shooting standards increased considerably. Young shooters
like Jerin James, Merin James, Ann Tresa, Aiswarya G.M, Akhil C.P and Elizebeth
O.M went on to win medals at the State and National level. The Association
became very active during this period as can be seen from the reports of
the AGM’s annexed hereto.
